Latest knitting project

Wednesday
This is the latest of my Knit for kids sweaters for our knitting ministry at church. I actually finished knitting it a while ago, but hadn't sewn it together, so I finally did so tonight. The Guideposts magazine Knit for Kids program was designed to demonstrate love to needy children in a tangible way, with handmade sweaters from the heart. The project began in 1996 almost by accident, and was the result of a photograph that appeared in the New York Times of a boy wearing a hand-knitted sweater that had been donated by a British charity organization. Seeing the image, one of Guideposts' book editors, who had formerly been involved with the British organization, decided to write a column about her own experience knitting sweaters for needy children. Reader response to the column was amazing, and the interest soon snowballed. Individuals began requesting patterns, sending knitted sweaters and donating money and yarn. Today, over 300,000 children's sweaters have been collected and redistributed, and the project has become so large, the magazine has handed over organization to World Vision.
