Hats off the mash tun - The Glenrothes

Day 3 of my Glenrothes Whisky adventure

Everyone was eager to know which part of the whole week we particularly enjoyed - so difficult to decide. One definite favourite was working in the mash tun area. This is one of the huge wooden tuns made of pitch pine. When a new one is installed, just two men assembly this structure which is more than 3 metres high.

When you make whisky, you are essentially starting off making beer - here the yeast is at its most active as you can see!
