Hurunui River Mouth

Hubby and I had a day out at the mouth of the Hurunui River, it was his suggestion which I couldn't turn down.

It was warm and calm but you can see the weather is about to change. No fishermen today, just a lady having a quiet stroll and a few fantails flittering about amongst the native bush on the cliffs. A container ship was heading to the port of Lyttleton and the Port Hills could be seen quite clearly in the distance but this shot is taken looking the other way, where the mouth of the river meets the Pacific Ocean after flowing from the eastern side of the Southern Alps. It is the fourth largest of the four principal rivers, looks quite small here but just behind me and round the corner its very wide. The best fishing is in the surf when the river is low and salmon are congregating outside the mouth waiting for a flood before running the river.

A bit of coastline, quite rugged round this part of the coast, a great sky and lovely colours of the sea and river. Farmland used for sheep farming round these parts.

On our return home we met the rain, stopped and had a late lunch at Pukeko Junction followed by a warm cuppa - a great day out.

Think I'm up to date with the backblips now and starting to settle back into routine after being away. If your interested in viewing my time in the North Island the backblips start here.

Looking forward to catching up with your journals :)
