The Wonderful Tale of Louis and Bernie

After a little bit of local research I uncovered the fascinating history of the the Grand Parade Garage and Louis and Bernie.. It would make an epic movie!

I've passed this on many occasions without really noticing it or, yesterdays blipped gas meters (just behind the gate), the unique tiled entrance or the Pratts 1'6 sign relating to Pratts Oil. They also produced the wonderfully named PRATTS PERFECTION MOTOR SPIRIT

In summary, the garage was run by two brothers, Louis and Bernie. Both had been born with cerebral palsy and yet managed to run the business, drive, and did a side-line in funerals for the local Jewry amongst other things. An incredible story and well worth a read.

And here's an even earleir tale from 1883, when it was a slaughterhouse. Savagery at the Slaughterhouse.
