The Unst Bus Shelter

Anyone who visits Unst makes a pilgrimage to the bus shelter and I am no exception.

This year, because the Tall Ships Race is coming to Shetland in July, the shelter has been decorated on that theme, in a colour scheme of blue, with relevant books, binoculars, decorated cushions, appliqueed lace curtains and posters added to the easy chair, sideboard, telephone, computer and monitor already there.

There's even a duster for the passengers to use while they wait, to keep the shelter looking spick and span. And, if they feel like a little gardening, there are windowboxes and the John Peel Memorial Traffic Island close by to be weeded.

Who would have thought that waiting for a bus could be so entertaining?

Following this we visited the Unst Heritage centre and later the Boat Haven, where, as the only visitors, we were treated to a guided tour by one of the most interesting and informative guides ever and learned so much about fourareens, sixareens and boats in general.

We also visited the Foords Chocolate manufactury, now based at the vacated Saxa Vord RAF site where there is a display of the RAF artefacts and photographs that were gifted to the shop.

We spent the evening in Gutcher visiting friends who moved there from Edinburgh and, as a bonus, were invited to travel on the bridge on return ferry.

It had been a dry day, although a litle chilly, much improved from the past few days.
