The Bewcastle Cross

Today I had to head into the Bewcastle Wastes on the hunt for some parts for one of our farm implements. On the way back, empty handed, I thought I may was well call in and have a look at Bewcastle Church and its cross. Apparently, the cross dates back to the 7th century and is one of the finest surviving Anglo-Saxon monuments. The inscriptions are not fully understood but are thought to refer to some of the local Christian Kings of the time. More information can be found here.

The site was also a Roman fort, used as a forward base to patrol the lands north of the Wall, linked to Birdoswald by the Maiden Way which still survives as a bridleway.
