Gillipaw's Journal

Kellie Castle, Fife, Scotland

A 14th century castle restored by Professor James Lorimer in the late 19th century as the family holiday home. What a magical place to spend your summer hols. It turns out that the family had connections with Sir William Burrell, who suggested several purchases, including large tables and religious icons similar to those in his collection in Glasgow.

Beautiful furniture designed by Sir Robert, paintings by several members of the family including his brother John Henry. There is a room dedicated to the artist's work.

This shot was taken from the stable courtyard, which includes the sculpture studio and exhibition of work by Hew Lorimer, son of Sir Robert. I chose this one to include one his sculptures as well as the fairytale turrets - one is a spiral staircase, and the other an alcove in the nursery.

We spent most of the day here, enjoying a tour of the house, the Walled Garden and the woods. I loved the place, as so much interested me here - the artworks, the furniture, the plasterwork, painted wood panels, wallhangings, and the beautiful garden layout. There were even peaches and figs growing in the garden ... in Scotland?!

This evening we have walked about four miles along the Fife Coastal Path ...we had a second visit to the excellent fish and chip place in Anstruther and needed the exercise.

Thank you for all the kind comments on the "engagement" Blip from yesterday. A real Blip moment.
