Friday 29 July 2011: Today's Harvest
Our squash plants are going crazy! I've never seen them so big or so prolific. The pole beans, however, are spindly as they climb up their bamboo teepee, but they still put out a good serving every day. An interesting side note: the purple beans turn green when they're cooked. The tiny mild green peppers are padrones, all the rage at our farmers' market: lightly sauteed in olive oil with a good shake of salt--a great appetizer. It's so much fun to go skipping out back and pick all this bounty, but I'm very glad we don't do this for a living. We lost our garlic crop to the late rains, and the plums as well--it's disappointing, but not devastating. It does give us an appreciation for what real farmers have to deal with.
