Akutaq

The crowberries are fruiting heavily on the moor - time to make the Akutaq.

Akutaq, or Eskimo Ice Cream, is made by mixing berries, meat, leaves, or roots with animal oil or fat. In the past it was an important source of vitamins for the Inuit during the long, dark winter days, now it is a traditional delicacy.

Cranberries, salmonberries, crowberries, cloudberries, blueberries, salmon, caribou, reindeer, walrus and moose fat and seal oil are all common ingredients.
