As soon as the sun comes out the large green fritillaries start to think about creating more large green fritillaries, which they do with some gusto.

As you can see butterflies mate "back-to-back", with the wings of the males typically found in between those of the female. The males attach themselves to the abdomen of the female with their claspers, and then inject the sperm into sacs called spermathecae. The sperm is stored there until until the female is ready to lay her eggs, upon which they will be fertilised.
