Pompeii in miniature

I was on the way to the shops when I first spotted this guy in the gutter down our street and stopped to have a closer look, thinking he was still alive. We've seen a couple on our front door step over the years, so while it might be a little odd to have this sort of amphibious visitor, it's not completely unknown. Sadly, on carefully approaching it I discovered it was dead, and presumably had been for a while, looking a little dried out. Had it died there or, as today was garden refuse day, been found in someone's garden and thrown out with the dead plants and hedge clippings only to end up on the street? Always a little sad to find dead creatures, however small, this seemed especially so with the active limbs, like one of the victims of Pompeii, overcome by the pyroclastic flows from Mount Vesuvius.
