Today's the day ............................ to reach for the sky

A special treat today, for a special day - our wedding anniversary. We were taken to an exhibition of Monet's paintings in the Swiss town of Martigny which meant driving through the Alps through the little town of Chamonix.

Chamonix lies at the foot of the highest mountain in Europe, Mont Blanc and the views all around it are staggering. You think you are looking at the top of the mountain - and then you notice the actual peak way above peeking out of the cloud.

This is the top of Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) directly northeast of Mont Blanc. Unbelievably, there is a cable car route to the summit from Chamonix. It takes about 20 minutes to cover the altitude gain of over 2,800 m and an adult ticket costs 42.50 euros return ..................
