judging

it was the judging for the first internal competition of the new season at the photo society tonight and i did quite well, with a second place in the mono print category and a pair of commended fourths.

not that i agree with the choices, mind. in fact mr judgeman seemed to bemuse most of the room with his absurd scoring, placing several shots pretty low that have earned highly in major comps, and being very over-enthusiastic with others that clearly weren't up to the mark. the worst thing though was his inability to a)recognise abstracts as a valid form of photography and b)actually recognise many things.

taking my own entries as an example, my mono shot that came second was a new one which wasn't my best, whereas another (interestingly, one of those) actually confused him so much that it ranked about 20-oddth as he didn't seem to be able to grasp the concept of why anyone would want to take a photo of someone in a dark, abandoned urban space with very little light and a distinct lack of nice pretty things.

oh and to cap it off, i entered an old shot that didn't do well because he said he couldn't work out what the hell the twirly bit was. hello?
