Sami's Snaps

By SamiColenutt

A sad morning but a brilliant day.

Last night I possibly had one of the best nights sleep of my life. Unfortunately we woke up to some very sad news. We were all meant to be seeing Incubus in the evening but the frontman Brandon Boyd had laringitis and had to cancel the show. Now...this was the reason we came to Amsterdam - as the lady who said "So..you came for nothing" pointed out to us later in the cafe - so it was incredibly sad news. But I hear that singing is pretty impossible with something like laringitis so we tried to stay positive and went out after breakfast to get our bikes and cycle around Amsterdam like the locals.

We definitely didn't look like locals on our hire bikes. But then we didn't really look like locals all weekend. It turns out Dutch people are incredibly tall - which we (especially me) are definitely not. We looked like children in amongst the Dutch giants.

Anyway, we cycled through the town (once Kathryn had got over her fear of bikes - oops..didn't know) to Vondel Park. The park was massive and lovely to cycle around. Next time we go I will take a picnic and beer and stay a little longer. Lunch in the cafe (with the very blunt waitress) was followed by the best waffle of my life. Seriously, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a waffle so much.

We then visited the Heineken museum and had a couple of beers before cycling back through scary traffic to the other side of Amsterdam for the vodka museum. A cheap hostel dinner was then followed by (a few too many) Heineken and a walk around the city asking "Do you know the way to Leidesplein?" rather drunkenly. We got there eventually. God knows how we got home again though...
