Biology Field Course: Day 3

Today we abandoned nature and resoundingly decided to do science indoors.

Every single group had planned to work on bee pollination or ant foraging and therefore every project had to be completely redesigned. A lot of them looked pretty miserable as we tried to find experiments for them to do inside. The highlight of my day was standing in the howling wind and rain trawling a pond for whatever freshwater invertebrates we could find for a potential experiment. Also, my boots sprung a leak and my feet have been soaked through all day.

The above photograph is a group's experiment looking at habitat preference in woodlice... the least enigmatic of the terrestrial crustaceans.

Fieldwork is awesome sometimes, but days like this make me feel less bad about sitting in the lab all day!
