Monday 12 December 2011: Victoria Clock Tower and wildflowers

The Clock tower came from England in 1860 and was put up in several places, at one point being re erected for Victoria's Jubilee. It was put on its present site in 1930 and to some extent strengthened in 1974 - probably luckily as it may yet survive the quakes and carry on.

The hands are stopped at 12:52pm when the quake struck on February 22 2011, which I hadn't noticed till today!

Opposite the clock tower is a bed of wild flowers where a brothel and upmarket housewares stores used to be - both have now been demolished.

The cross on the top of the tower is badly bent, but as yet hasn't fallen off - I'm surprised it hasn't been removed in case it falls!
