Saturday 17 December 2011: Kaaimans River
While this image shows the Kaaimans River Bridge, the above image, almost from the same spot, shows as the river enters the Indian ocean.
As mentioned before, this rail line is no longer in use due to structural damage after heavy flooding a few years ago.
The line can be seen disappearing into a tunnel which took the traveler to the now disfunct Kaaimans Grotto Restaurant.
'Kaaiman's Grotto used to be South Africa's only restaurant in a cave, a large natural cave with a spectacular view of the ocean. Located on the seaside cliffs of Victoria Bay at the Kaaiman's River Mouth, it could be reached only by train.
The trains to the cave restaurant departed from the Wilderness station.
Kaaiman's Grotto restaurant was one of the largest venues on the Garden Route, seating 160 to 270 people. It became especially popular as a location for congress dinnes, wedding receptions, product launches, and other festivities. '
Fortunately the beautiful views have not been affected by the flooding that caused so many problems.
