Slow way home

Hibiscus colors of Rapa Nui

Today we explored one of the key archaelogical sites on Rapa Nui called Orongo and the Rano Kao crater.

Orongo was the home of the original Birdman festival where tribes would have a swimming race to one of the islands (Moto Nui) and try to find the first egg of the sooty tern bird. The patient winner was known as "Birdman" and thought to have extra special powers. It was a brilliant site and very hard to leave.

The round trip hike from Hanga Roa was tough but rewarding work and took about 5 hours with plenty of stops to photograph the scenery and flora including these hibiscus flowers showing off their 2 shades of pink.

Another brilliant day on the "slow way home".
