Thursday 9 February 2012: Weta

This is a weta. They are native to New Zealand. We have a number of different weta types in NZ but this chap is a tree weta. It is probably fully grown, the normal tody length is generally about 4cm which this one is.

They live in holes in trees and eat plants and bugs. They are relatively harmless although they will hiss and bite if they feel cornered, and they will hunch up to make themselves appear more intimidating.

Relatively harmless or not, I do not like them!
