The sign must be read

If we go somewhere and there is a sign, my husband must read it. He loves museums as they have loads to read. I prefer to look.

We went to Old Sarum today. It is the predecessor to Salisbury. It was a proper town with a castle and a cathedral. The earth ramparts are immense and would have been very hard to scale and attack the town.

I assume that either the population out grew its size or because obtaining water on the top of a hill was difficult but New Salisbury was built in a great meadow below the ramparts.

The cathedral is built on a gravel bed with unusually shallow foundations of 18 inches upon wooden faggots. In fact the foundations must not dry out and in the cases of very dry summers, water must be pumped into the foundations.

If you haven't been to see Salisbury Cathedral, put it on your list of places to visit. In particular take a guided tour as you get to go up the spire - the tallest in Britain
