The fool on the hill

Particle Physics

So today was 'Big Bang' day. I thought it was great. The thought of all that equipment (and the size of it) to look at something so tiny and ephemeral and almost impossible to see is just mind blowing.
Some 0f the magnets draw 20,000 amps through supercooled superconductors.
The 'packet' of protons whizzes around the 27km tunnel 11,000 times a second in a beam twice the thickness of a human hair (that's about .004 of an inch).
And here's a really interesting fact: If the Large Hadron Collider was the size of a donut, guess how big a proton would be?

Same size as it has always been ;-)
