St Andrew's Cathedral, Singapore, storm brewing

St Andrew's Cathedral is the third church of this dedication in Singapore.

Designed by Ronald MacPherson, the Executive Engineer of the Colony and Superintendent of Convicts, it was built by Indian convict labour. The first service was held in 1861 and became a Cathedral in 1870.

It is in Neo Gothic style and is finished in Madras chunam (shell-lime and sand), which gives it its white finish in the sunshine. The cathedral is said to be inspired by the ruined Netley Abbey in Hampshire.

Inside there are many imperial monuments The Cathedral has a flourishing Singaporean Chinese Christian congregation who were preparing for Easter with a special Easter Sunday daybreak service for children at 6am.
