Beaver

Had a great day today. Ian got off early and he, Steve, Arvin and I headed up Mount Baker Highway in search of adventure. First we went to Mosquito Lake Road in search of eagles. We didn't find a single one. But it was a beautiful sunny day so we walked along the Nooksack River and enjoyed the view.

Next we headed on up the road to see Nooksack Falls. The falls are fenced off and are very hard to photograph. We meandered around and then headed back down to Il Cafe Refugio where we ate a delicious dinner and had a good talk with Richard who owns the place. My paintings of Georgia Pacific are hanging there so it was a visit to them as well. Richard had made some cookies from a kind of pepper that will knock your socks off. We each had a tiny taste and found them amazingly hot and, once you recovered, quite good.

We drove home arriving at about six. Ian suggested we walk down to Scudder Pond to see what we could find. The owl was in her nest down in the park. Her tail was sticking out of the hole. There were birds a plenty. And then this fellow swam across the pond and into the reeds to enter his lodge. I knew there were beavers because of all the gnawed trees about. But I hadn't noticed until today the large bulge in among the reeds that is their home. I suspect we'll be seeing more of him soon. Check out this photo in large. And I will be posting more photos on Chaikins of Bellingham.
