Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

A fine day on Iona

A gloriously sunny day to visit the Island of Iona to see St Mary's Abbey, a monastic settlement including the remains of the large early historic monastic settlement founded by St Columba in AD 563, and parts of medieval buildings associated with the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary founded around AD 1200.

The cross of St Martin, a high Celtic cross of local red granite, has stood here since about 800 AD. It is sculptured in low relief and stands 16'8" high in its stepped base. The name dates back to at least 1699 AD.
