Stone-washed

Being so close to Hadrian's Wall is great in that we have an amazing piece of history on our doorstep which also allows us to run a successful tourism business. It also comes with disadvantages though, one of which is that ploughing the fields is very heavily restricted. This makes improving the grass a challenge. On top of this we are organic, so killing the existing grass with weedkiller before adding new seed also isn't an option. This leaves over-seeding as really the only option left. Unfortunately, this method has a much more variable success rate and so before we apply the seed we need to correct the soil so that conditions are optimal for the grasses to take. Today we took the first step by applying some pulverised limestone to raise the pH level. It was a dusty job, and walkers on the Wall looked a little concerned at the massive dust cloud that followed the spreader. Thankfully the breeze was helpful and the dust soon drifted away and settled on the grass.
