Eclipsed...

We have been bombarded by the facts but I still find it fascinating.

The sun is 400 times larger than the moon and 400 times further away and it's this perfect combination that makes our moon eclipse the sun so perfectly.  The moon is moving away from the earths orbit by 3.8 centimetres a year so in a couple of hundred or thousand years, the moon won't perfectly cover the sun when it comes in front of it.

I remember someone had an idea for a book,  was possibly Iain Banks, where the earth was a tourist destination for extra terrestrials because of the solar eclipse.  There's certainly no other planet in our solar system, that does it so the probability of other inhabited planets having the combination is probably quite slim.  Aliens would treat our eclipse like a Niagra Falls or Grand Canyon.  Visiting earth to see it's unique event.
