Creatures-to-be

Mother Nature giveth and Mother Nature taketh away...

When we moved into our house, there was a big (16"-ish) koi carp in the pond. We named him George, because it was hilarious that people would think he was called Jaws when we started saying his name. To keep George company, we bought three more koi, of about five inches each: Sushi, Bruce and Bubbles.

About three weeks ago, we noticed that the pond was rather, well, devoid of koi. Sure enough, all four fish were gone. Various theories abounded (including one involving otters), but the likelihood is that a bird or a particularly-aquatic cat got them.

Anyway, nature clearly abhors a vacuum, and the pond is now full of frogspawn (and quite a few mummy and daddy frogs as well). Soon, we'll have about a gazillion tadpoles, which will at least provide some amusement and maybe a blip of them in a jar.

There's now a spirited debate about whether to replace the koi. Personally, I would, or perhaps get a few goldfish. Mme Tepeka, however, is leaning towards filling the pond in and getting a bit more lawn space. I fully expect to come home one day and find her outside with a hose and a shovel.

This can't end well...
