McCarthy Castle, Ballinskellig

Just back from a fantastic few days in County Kerry - fab B&B, excellent food and tons of interesting diversions: wild scenery, wild weather, cliff top holy wells, tetrapod tracks down by the ocean, enormous sandy beaches, stone forts,  rock art, shipwrecks, castles, abbeys, little shrines on the mountainside, a lot of bog, sparkling views of Skellig Michael, even a sprinkling of snow (we watched it being dumped) on top of the wonderfully named Macgillycuddyreeks!!
Backblips tomorrow, just had to get my Derelict Thursday entry up. This is an old tower house, accessible by a causeway and with a commanding view of Ballinskelligs Bay. Once three stories high, it was built in the 16C by a McCarthy to protect the bay from pirates. Not many home comforts but thick walls and teeny windows. Many thanks to Lynnfot for hosting DT today.
