My topsy-turvy life

Siege mentality

After a few days in Edinburgh we had a few days in Lundin Links and spent a nice day, despite the weather, in St Andrews.

We did all the sights in St Andrews (about half an hour then?) in the almost constant drizzle. We had a wander around the cathedral ruins and then headed over to the castle. I like castles, but it was just a fairly standard castle ruin until we found the entrance to the siege tunnel...

While the castle was being sieged by James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, in 1546 (thanks wikipedia) he ordered a mine to be cut into the solid rock to try and gain access to the castle. The defenders of the castle then dug a counter-mine to intercept them and you can now actually walk stoop through them, as Laura's demonstrating here.

On the way to St Andrews we went via Scotland's Secret Bunker, an old cold war bunker, and it's brilliant, we would both highly recommend it, especially if the weather's wet.
