Saturday 29 November 1952: My Christening
I was born near Darjeeling, West Bengal, just before Sir Edmund Hilary and Tensing conquered Everest. My father was a tea planter and whilst on leave in England, met my mother and asked her to return with him as his wife. Sadly my mother hated the life out there - still in the last throes of colonialism, and they returned when I was two. I was the largest baby to be born in the nursing home appearing at a massive 9lb 12 oz. I was christened at st Andrews Church, Darjeeling on the 30th November 1952. My proud and rather mischievious looking Pa was 28 and my glamorous Ma 23.
