Skateraw Limekiln

Marked on Forrest's map of 1799 Skateraw limekiln was among several in East Lothian which, by 1783, were producing 86,000 tonnes of lime annually. This was used extensively in farming to neutralise acidity of the soil and also in the building and iron industries, sugar refining and the making of bleach.
Constructed as a single kiln with four stoking holes it used locally quarried limestone. It has been category B listed since 1989.

I have added an extra photo to yesterday's blip to show the remote-controlled lawnmower at work.
