Two-Headed Deer

This morning, on the last day of our camping trip in Yosemite, we took a short walk before breakfast and came across a herd of ten deer. It's unusual to see so many at once, and we watched with delight as they nibbled leaves and snuffled around at the edge of the woods. It's a wonder there are any leaves left on the trees. The animals were majestically aloof, not even acknowledging our presence.

The pile of rocks in the background is the Merced River, normally fast rushing snowmelt, reduced now to a steady flow, but nothing to write home about. More than a trickle, but far less than a proper river. Yosemite Falls is completely dry, with disappointed tourists wondering what all the fuss is about.

We had a good meander before it was time to leave for the long ride home, managed yet again to find a trail we had never seen before, and enjoyed a farewell picnic looking upriver at beloved Half Dome,
