The Angel of the North

Designed by Sir Antony Gormley, this commands a hilltopbeside the A1motorway just south of Newcastle upon Tyne.
It weighs 200 tonnes, is 20 metres tall, and and the wingspan is 54 metres. It comprises sufficient steel to build 4 Chieftain tanks.
This statue was erected in 1998. It is anchored into the coal measures below on 8 concrete piles that go down 33 metres, topped by a 5.5 metres high concrete slab plinth amd anchored down with 52 x 3 metre-long steel bolts, and is built to withstand 100mph winds.
It is breathtaking. Amazing.
