Spinach with chickpeas

I had a lot of spinach that would not stay fresh for much longer, so this recipe was just perfect. My meal did not look very photogenic today, but I love the dark green color of the spinach anyway.

It comes from Claudia Roden's The Book of Jewish Food, like the falafel I posted on Blip earlier this month. She writes that spinach and chickpeas are a common combination in sefardic communities. This dish was often eaten on new year's eve: the chickpeas would then represent abundance, and the spinach renewal.
