Unknown Soldiers

On the second day of our trip South, we stopped in Salisbury, North Carolina, the site of a national cemetery where Bob's great-grandfather is buried. The long row of tombstones in this picture, each inscribed "Unknown Soldier," mark rows of trenches in which 11,400 northern boys- all prisoners of war- were buried during the ""War between the States" or Civil War around the year 1863. A carefully mowed green lawn covers the trenches. We had never been here before, and we found it beautifully kept, but a sad sight, marking a tragic event. We left the cemetery, located a florist's shop, and returned with a colorful bouquet that Bob placed near the monument in memory of his great-grandfather.
