Siikaneva

We had a family hike at Siikaneva today. I love the area, and we were very lucky with the weather too.

Siikaneva is the largest continuous wetland area and the most significant wetlands conservation area in the Tampere region. The size of conservated Siikaneva fen is approximately 1500 hectares. It is a natural peatland complex which contains a variety of peatland types , rich birdlife, old natural forest islands as well as natural untouched landscapes. Paths are mostly equipped with duckboards.

Finland has more mires and peatlands regarding its land area than any country in the world; one third of its total land area is covered with them, approximately 9.3 million hectares. As a part of forest management, over half of Finnish mires have been drained. Approximately 6.3 million hectares of peatlands have been drained for forestry and about 0.3 million hectares for agriculture. The total area of undrained peatlands is approximately 4 million hectares.
