Through a lens darkly

This is work

Day 2 of the microCARS conference in Naurod, Germany.

The conference organisers very helpfully laid on some free beers for the poster session today. It really helps the scientific discussion!

Highlights:

1. Chatting to a 'rock star' of the field, making him laugh and finding out he's really cool and nice and has accepted our offer to be an invited speaker when we host a conference at Exeter next year.

2. Meeting up with my chums in the field - it's a really great bunch of people.

Low points:

1. Attending a support group for women in science that was held this lunchtime. We were advised to act more like men in order to get ahead in science. I find this insulting and an over-simplification of the issues. We were actually told to be like Margaret Thatcher and pitch our voices lower to be taken more seriously.

You know what? Men aren't the problem. My voice isn't the problem. The SYSTEM is the problem. We need to fix that and the rest will sort itself out. I am going to write a strongly worded email...
