White Egret

I had such a fun day today in spite of the lack of sun and the occasional bit of rain. After breakfast we drove to the Cypress Wetlands in Port Royal and walked along the boardwalk, where we saw lots of white egrets--many sitting on nests--a couple of green heron, blue heron, a couple  anhinga, cardinals and even a small alligator. From there we went to Paris Island where we visited the Marine Corp Museum, something I'd been looking forward to, as my dad did his basic training there when he was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1943. We all enjoyed it and had a good laugh because they had a "sample" pack weighing 43.9 lbs.--the same weight  the trainees have to carry on their backs as they run a zillion miles in training--I could barely get it off the ground! 
Following that we went to the Chapel of Ease, built in 1740; it  burned down in a forest fire in 1886 & was never repaired. The basic brick building is still standing, much like yesterdays, but smaller, & again is located in a really lovely setting. Fort Fremont was our next stop. It was built in the 1890's in response to the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, and was built to defend Port Royal Naval Station across the bay on Paris Island.  We stopped for a really late lunch/early dinner, then made a brief stop back at the hotel before taking off to walk the other half of the historical area that we didn't see last evening. Walked through St. Helenas Cemetery where the oldest grave is from 1724--very old for us here in the U.S.  Sorry for my lack of comments, but we've been on the move non-stop, and I'll catch up when I can. :))
