Heron

No luck with Otters today but I did find plenty of prints & Otter Spraint/Poop. There was plenty of other wildlife to be seen including Roe Deer, Buzzard, Wren, Mallards, Mergansers, Grey Wagtails, Dippers and this Heron that I suprised from the bank as I walked along.
Not bad for a stretch of River that was badly polluted from the paper & cotten/flaxmills chicken processing plant and other industry along its banks,. The river has undergone a big clean up and it has benefited from the downturn in these industries that has seen all the Cloth mills close, as have all but one of the paper mills and even Grampian Country Chicken have moved their business to Thailand!!!!. The upshot is the River Don has reborn, the Salmon & Trout have recovered their numbers so have the the Otters, Mergansers & Herons that prey on them. The one species that has not recovered are the water voles, Predation by Mink saw them off. trapping has virtually rid the river of Mink but of the Water Voles I have not seen any.
