Flag of St David

Today's the day …………………….. to wish you Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant Hapus

This is what is flying chez nous  today because it's St David's Day and this is his flag.

It looks rather like something a pirate might be displaying on the mast of his galleon - but the yellow cross on a black field is the bona fide 'Baner Dewi Sant'.

Saint David (c. 500 – c. 589) was born 15 centuries ago on the Pembrokeshire cliffs during a ‘fierce storm’.  He became a monk at a young age and eventually a Bishop of Menevia.  He founded a monastery where St David's Bishop's Palace and the Cathedral are now built.  He is the patron saint of Wales - but It wasn’t until the 18th century that St. David’s Day was declared a national day of celebration.

We're raising a glass to him tonight …………………...
