Tom Mix...

In George Wyllie's Tom Mix artwork, bullets are replaced by soap bars and the white hat of the 'goody' gets extended to include a white waistcoat, with soap bars replacing stored bullets.

George Wyllie grew up in Glasgow, cinema city, and like many of his contemporaries he was a fan. Tom Mix, the actor, was the archetypal cowboy of the silent era, to a large extent creating the stereotypical cowboy generations of cinema-goers came to love. White Stetson, the good guy amongst the baddies...

When Wyllie was in America during his residency at the Rickey Foundation in the early 80s, he went to exhibit in Massachusetts and his fascination with America was seen in his Incomplete History of American Transport, and in his later Americana exhibitions, as well as in the works he created about Tom Mix.

Even with his love of America, there were still questions and the soap raises questions, as well as smiles at the exhibition, and that's a good thing.
