Building Blocks

When we were young, we embarked on a life, a career, an endeavor. We dreamed of who we wanted to be, how we wanted to be it, where we wanted to do, all that we would do. Most of us had dreams of how well we would do whatever we pursued and we imagined that we would be well thought of for doing it. We were sort of our very own 'celebrity in the making'.

As life unfolded, we learned that nothing is as straight forward as we had imagined. Nothing ends up as perfect as we had painted it in our mind, and no one appreciates us as much as we had predicted they would.

So, what motivates some to continue to pursue excellence, to study when they are already 'mid-game' in the game of life, to grow, to change, to build on their mistakes and achieve great heights?

What makes some believe that all their learning, their growing, their reaching of new heights is over when they have done the things they thought about doing...once or twice. They noticed their body was slowing down so they put the 'kick stand' down and came to a stop, just waiting while the world around them rolls on.

If it's never too late to start, and we are going to predict a future, we might as well start now, and we might as well predict a good one. I don't know what makes the difference, as I seem to be the latter by nature, but having made a decision to be the former, I seem to be able to keep trying and keep finding a measure of success. Perfection is beyond my comprehension, but trying seems within my grasp. Having heard many testimonials about entirely new careers or lives that began after 50 and reached great heights, I find myself full of anticipation, eager to know what will become of all the building blocks I have picked up and placed upon the ones before them, and all those I have yet to reach for.
