Spur winged plovers Vanellus miles novaehollandiae

Very grey dull day so had to up the ISO, hence the graininess!

In large it is possible to see the spurs on the wings (yellow colour) for which these birds are named.

A raucous bird, aggressive towards other birds near its nest, it will even take on harriers.

self introduced from Australia, they have spread all over NZ, and can live well in man made environments (e.g. motorway median strips), as well as in parks, on farmland, and (not so good) around airports, where they must be culled.
