Emerald eyes
Beautiful light along the river this evening - it smelt just like a saltmarsh as the silt deposited during the winter floods finally dries out. More trees are coming into leaf - alder and field maple - as well as the very first hawthorn blossom Out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a jewel-like turquoise and amber kingfisher dart down the river, and then spent some time watching a cormorant with brilliant emerald eyes fishing in the backwater, whose mirror-like surface was reflecting all the colours of spring.
