Allotment envy

This afternoon’s walk with Erin took us past the allotments wedged between Fletcher Park and the cemetery on Parkside Road. A dozen years back we had a small plot on Sedbergh Road, but we gave it up not long after we moved into our current house and struggled juggling our new garden, the allotment and the demands of two small children.

But I still love the idea of the allotment. A small piece of land which is communally owned, divided into smaller units and then nursed into life to create veg beds, floral displays, summer fruits and places of beauty and tranquility. When our current condition passes, I hope we can build a new society which draws on the simple communitarian values of the allotment.
