Reflecting

Your work has only recently been widely recognised. What do you feel about this?
I do not think an artist should change once he becomes widely recognised. It is a pleasure to see that what one does has a significance, communicates with other people, produces an interest and pleasure. This does not mean searching for recognition - it happens. I think one's work should always be a form of research, examination, inspection. It is like a stone thrown in the water - it makes ripples that go outward. From the beginning you get acknowledgment in your small, immediate environment. Then the orbit grows larger until it transcends itself. It would not be possible to produce work without being able to communicate.
