Book of the duchess: Jacqueline signs the charter

Number 23: Michael, relenting, presents a charter of the people’s rights for the duchess to sign. This reinstates her if she will dismiss Guillot. Raoul makes eyes at Marguerite.

The plot episode 22 (summarised from the text of Lorna’s novel)

Michael drew up charter for the rights of the people. This included the provision to reinstate Jacqueline as duchess following the formal dismissal of Guillot. Jacqueline signed the charter unconditionally, and with charm.

Lorna’s remarks

Things are looking up. This picture is better.

Raoul has a funny nose and one page has a formula for legs, but the background being simpler is betters and - on the whole - the picture is not unconvincing. For repeat of background, see number 28.

Costumes here have gone a bit crazy, for Michael has gone back to thirteenth century armour and a surcoat, but for explanation see notes on number 26*. After all, in Montvallon anything can happen.

Poor Marguerite looks most uncomfortable. Is it partisanship, or does she dislike Raoul?

The seated figure on the floor is better.
