History Mystery

A busy and very enjoyable day. Today we hosted Finola and Robert, who so kindly took us off exploring rock art last saturday, and took them off on a history mystery tour.  We've walked miles  -  high up on the edge of cliffs, round the lake, up towards the mountain, passed fields of daffoldils, through farmyards  and perused and discussed all sorts of interesting things - stone circle, graveyard, holy wells, standing stones, bardic school ,  and an enigmatic stone that we were hoping was covered in rock art but probably wasn't. Home for a hearty bowl of soup and then off to the Lady's Well for a grand finale. This is just one of the enigmatic madonnas to be found on the mass rock - once an open air altar  place where catholics had to worship in secret. Next to her is a ballaun stone, again no-one's quite sure what these scooped out stones were for but they are often found at early Christian sites, and behind that an eartheware jar with the sad remnants of an offering of flowers. A powerful place, set high on the mountain over looking Bantry Bay and still much visited.
The last episode of Borgen 2 to watch tonight - an excellent series.
