The Lozarithm Lens

Sam Widges

When I first came to Calne house-hunting in 1988, this building was A4 Antiques, and had a coffee and cake room on its mezzanine level. When it came up for sale a few year later I had plans to restore and renovate it, and enlisted the help of a friend who worked in a health food shop in Church Street called Wise Sage. In the event, I was unable to raise sufficient capital, but my friend went into partnership with the managers of Wise Sage to acquire and move into the premises. The renovations were rather botched, against my friend's wishes, and sadly the shop was never the success it should have been.

A few years ago it changed hands to become Sam Widges, who specialise in baguettes and salads and all kinds of yummy foods, and I have had many a baguette picnic from there in places near and far as a result.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Temptations - Papa Was A Rollin' Stone (1972)
R.I.P. Richard Street who died on this day (October 5, 1942 - February 27, 2013) and was one of the lead singers on this epic Norman Whitfield Motown production. Damon Harris, who passed away the previous week, had also recently joined the band when this was recorded, having previously been in a Temptations tribute act. A later version of this song was recorded by Marsha Hunt, whose child Karis was fathered by Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.
