The government has decided to “help” people spread out their electricity usage and avoid peak times when demand may compromise the system. This is not the electricity company trying to make (even more) money, but a directive from above. The cheap (ie normal) tariff is midnight to 8am, a good time to do all your washing, cooking etc - not. In Menorca all 8 municipalities ban the creation of noise 30db and over , less than the sound emitted by a washer on full spin. €1000 fine. The other tariff zones are a higher early morning and late afternoon and evening one, and a punitive red zone of two hours either side of midday, and all evening up to 10pm. This is confusing to everyone, and as the bills are already huge somewhat worrying. I now have to look at the clock before switching on a major appliance, and then check the chart because there is no way I can remember it. This is apart from all the constantly-changing covid rules, which don’t really affect me as we never eat out, avoid people like the plague(!) and always wear masks. I may continue to do those things when/if all this is over ...
